Memorial Day is May 27: Here is a list of Ohio area events and observances

Memorial Day has come to signify the start of summer for many Americans and is often celebrated with cookouts, family get-togethers and concerts. But the real meaning of Memorial Day has, for too many Americans, gotten lost in the rush to celebrate the beginning of summer.

Memorial Day is a day of reflection and remembrance. It is a day to remember all of our Fallen Heroes from all of the wars. It is a day to be thankful to those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

Let us not forget the men and women that are still fighting for our freedom around the world and for those who continue to fight their internal battles here at home.

Note: All events take place on Monday May 27 unless otherwise specified.
